My friend is finally out of the hospital.
She’s out of the hospital, yes, but in hospice and not at home. It’s only a matter of time now and I need to get over there to see her ASAP. I don’t have a day off until a week from now and we’re short staffed, but I think it’s more important that I go see her.
This is the first time I’m having to deal with the loss of a friend in this manner. I’ve had friends die in accidents, but this experience is new to me. As I get older I guess I’m going to have to deal with this more frequently but that doesn’t make it any easier...

Definitely go and see her. If your boss is a decent human being he will completely understand and encourage you to take the time in spite of being short staffed.
I’ve spent far more time around hospice than I care to remember, but still wish I’d gone more when I had the chance. Take every moment you can.

One of my best friends growing up had his dad pass away while we were in college after an accident at work landed hijm in the hospital. My friend hesitated about going to see his own dad and I had to tell him “You go, I’ll deal with whoever decides to give you shit”. And covered for his part in a physics project we had. Sadly, his father ended up passing a few hours after he got to the hospital, but at least he got to say his goodbyes with family and friends.
SO just go. Find a friend or someone you trust who will shut down the BS. I didn’t encounter a single ounce of pushback once I pulled out “Someone close is dying/died in the hospital. It’s going to be a few days. Get over it. ” And everyone else did and the world marched on. So go do it and deal with the rest of the consequences later.

Just get up and go ASAP. Ask your boss for forgiveness later.

Go. You’ll never regret going.
Good chance you’d regret not going.

She’s a co-worker, so I wonder how many current and former employees I’ll run into. But it doesn’t matter - I’ll take the heat that comes from any fallout. She and I are close and people know that, so I think I’ll be forgiven. It’s not like I’m in the best of shape right now, and it’s a minor miracle of I can get a full work week in these days so it’s almost a surprise when I make it in. If I call off tomorrow I don't think anyone would be surprised.

I think you know what to do. Speaking from experience, don’t hesitate, don’t second guess. You can undo a lot of mistakes, but you can’t reverse time. Go be a light for her while you can.
Peace to you and your friend.

D o it - if you don’t you know you will regret it later. Then go find a nice long straight stretch of road and wind it out.
